An official communique issued by telecom said there were no formal requests from South Korean or US foreign ministries, yet Washington was pressing its allies to keep Huawei away from its network and reached its peak last week when the US president blocked companies such as Qualcomm and Google from dealing with the Chinese company.

South Korea may be an ally of the United States, but China remains the largest export market for the Asian nation. Reuters quoted government data as saying nearly a quarter of exports were destined for China and the South Korean Foreign Ministry simply said it was aware of the US position on fifth-generation equipment security.
